Abstract

This research examines the characteristics of hadith manuscripts written and preserved in Buton during the 19th century. The Buton Sultanate is located in the city of Baubau, Southeast Sulawesi. In the 19th century, Buton was led by a sultan named Muhammad Idrus Kaimuddin. He was both a sultan and an Islamic scholar who played a major role in developing the literary tradition in the Buton region. Sultan Idrus was highly active in writing across various fields of knowledge; among his works examined in this study are the hadith books titled Sabīl al-Salām li Bulūgh al-Marām and Durrāt al-Ahkam. Additionally, the author also examines an anonymous hadith manuscript with the code DS 0010 00113. Through philological and codicological approaches, this study seeks to uncover the style of hadith writing that developed in this eastern region of Indonesia. The research findings indicate that the three manuscripts share similar characteristics: they are practical in nature, as they do not mention the complete chains of transmission, and pedagogical, as they contain hadiths regarding procedures of worship alongside themes of targhīb and tarhīb (motivation and warning). These books were written in Arabic script on European paper, reflecting the intellectual dynamics and scholarly networks of Buton at that time. These findings not only confirm the existence of a living tradition of hadith writing in Buton, but also expand the map of Nusantara hadith studies, which has thus far been largely dominated by the regions of Java and Sumatra.
