Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Pegon Sumatra orthography in improving students’ ability to read religious texts at MTs Al Huda Gorontalo. The research arises from the difficulty experienced by MTs students in decoding Arabic based texts that do not align with local phonological patterns. Guided by the Orthographic Depth Hypothesis, Simple View of Reading, and Dual Route Model, the study focuses on the role of Pegon Sumatra in strengthening decoding accuracy, reading fluency, and comprehension. The research uses a quasi experimental pretest posttest design involving two balanced groups of seventh grade students with a total of forty six participants. The experimental group received structured instruction through direct phonics, guided reading, and repeated reading using Pegon Sumatra, while the control group received regular instruction without Pegon. Data analysis was conducted using Shapiro Wilk, Levene, independent samples t test, and N Gain. The results show a significant improvement in the experimental group with a posttest mean score of 78 compared to 66 in the control group and an N Gain value of 0.41 in the moderate high category. Statistical tests confirm a strong effect of Pegon based instruction on reading performance with p less than 0.001. The study concludes that Pegon Sumatra is an effective instructional orthography for enhancing decoding, fluency, and comprehension in Islamic literacy education.
