Abstract

This study investigates the effect of learning Pegon Arabic orthography on students’ Arabic language literacy at MA Swasta Alkhairaat, Gorontalo City, where empirical evidence on Pegon-based instruction remains limited. Using a quantitative quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group design, 60 students were divided into an experimental class receiving Pegon-based instruction and a control class receiving conventional teaching. Arabic literacy was assessed through a test covering orthographic, morphological, and reading comprehension skills, and the data were analyzed with tests of normality and homogeneity, paired-samples and independent-samples t-tests, and N-Gain. The pre-test means of the control and experimental groups were comparable (61.83 and 62.33), indicating similar initial ability, while post-test results showed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean score (83.60) than the control group (71.17). All data met the assumptions of normality and homogeneity, and paired-samples t-tests revealed significant gains within both groups (p < 0.001), with the experimental group experiencing a substantially larger improvement, as confirmed by the N-Gain value of 0.56 (medium–high category). These findings demonstrate that Pegon-based instruction is more effective than conventional teaching in enhancing students’ Arabic literacy, particularly their skills in reading, writing, and understanding Arabic texts. Pegon functions as a cognitive and cultural bridge between the Arabic script and the students’ local language, thereby strengthening both linguistic competence and the local Islamic literacy tradition. Consequently, integrating Pegon Arabic orthography into Arabic language curricula is recommended as a contextually relevant pedagogical innovation for Indonesian madrasahs.
