Analysis of the Reading Ability of Sundanese Pegon Arabic Through the Book of Sullam al-Mubtadi fi Ta'lim al-Mubtadiin at MTs Negeri 1 Gorontalo City: Quantitative Approach

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of the use of the book Sullam al-Mubtadi fi Ta'lim al-Mubtadiin in Sundanese Pegon Arabic script on the reading ability of Sundanese Pegon Arabic students of MTs Negeri 1 Gorontalo City. The research method used is quantitative with quasi experimental design, which involves two classes: VIII.3 as an experimental class and VIII.4 as a control class. Data were collected through a pre-test and post-test of Pegon Arabic reading ability, and analyzed using paired t-tests, independent t-tests, N-Gain calculations, and Cohen's effect measures d. The results showed that there was a significant increase in the reading ability of Sundanese Pegon Arabic students in the experimental class compared to the control class. The average N-Gain value of the experimental class of 0.63 (medium-high category) and Cohen's d of 1.21 showed a very large learning effect. Learning based on the book of Pegon is not only statistically effective, but also pedagogically and culturally meaningful, because it is able to integrate local values in the process of Islamic literacy. Thus, the use of the book Sullam al-Mubtadi is worthy of being recommended as an alternative learning model in improving religious literacy based on local culture in madrasas.
