Abstract

This paper examines the clan as a symbol of kinship and its role in shifting social status in the Gorontalo community. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study that seeks to explain the role of the clan as a symbol of kinship in the people of Barakati Village, Gorontalo Regency. The technique used in this research is observation, interview and documentation. The results showed that the clan in Barakati is still used as a measuring tool to outline the kinship system, the clan ties are used as one of the symbols. This is reflected in all the people of Barakati Village who still adhere to the kinship or kinship system. The clan is used from the paternal lineage, or can be adopted directly from the father's name. As for the shift in social status, as reflected in the case of changing clans only to get recognition that he came from a prominent family, there was a shift in social status.
