Abstract

This study analyzes the use of Qur’anic exegesis references in Friday sermons delivered at several mosques affiliated with the Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim Education Foundation in Gowa Regency. It employed a descriptive design using 20 structured assessment responses on a five-point Likert scale collected from parties involved in the implementation of Friday sermons. Five indicators were examined: the relevance of the selected verse to the sermon theme, the delivery of a complete translation, the citation of the translation source, the explanation of verses based on a particular tafsir, and the mention of a tafsir work. The data were processed through frequency distributions, percentages, and mean scores, while documentation and field notes were used to clarify the context. The findings indicate that selecting verses relevant to the sermon theme reached a very high category with a mean score of 4.40, while presenting a complete translation was high at 3.50. Explaining verses using a particular tafsir scored 3.10 and mentioning a tafsir work scored 2.80, both in the moderate category. Citing the translation source was the weakest aspect, with a mean score of 2.20 or a low category. These findings show that the sermons were strongly oriented toward Qur’anic texts, yet source transparency and the consistent use of exegetical authority had not become established practices. Strengthening source literacy, preparing sermon guidelines based on authoritative tafsir works, and introducing concise citation practices are necessary to improve the accuracy and educational value of Friday sermons.
